There are so many students who live and breathe the Nourish movement. These individuals devote themselves to not only their chapters and Nourish experience, but also to living a life helping others and changing our world. Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be highlighting some of our incredible students!
Mikaela Fitzwilliam found Nourish International in a more convoluted way than most. One day a friend sent her a link to the Nourish website; she had heard about Nourish through her dad’s brother’s friend who had daughters involved with the Nourish chapter at UNC-Chapel Hill. As a business major, Mikaela was interested in Nourish’s unique business model and emphasis on sustainability.
In the fall of 2014 Mikaela and a friend founded a Nourish chapter at McGill University. However, they were twice denied organization status, meaning they couldn’t host events or book meeting spaces. By the end of the first semester, they had raised just $550 of their $10,000 end of year goal.
After returning from winter break, the chapter worked tirelessly to make their $10,000 goal a reality. By the end of the year they had exceed their expectations, raising $15,000 and investing $10,000 of it into their partner organization, Project in Peru. McGill University was named Chapter of the Year, and Mikaela says that none of it would have been possible without “perseverance, motivation, hard-work, enthusiasm, and optimism.”
